The 2024 matboard is selected from a series of botanical museum illustrations by Flemish naturalist Anselmus de Boodt.
Anselmus de Boodt was a Flemish humanist, mineralogist, physicist and naturalist. His research with the German Georg Agricola became the foundation of modern mineralogy.
Anselmus de Bute came from a noble family. His ancestors came from Dordrecht in the 13th century. His father was a prominent broker who also provided overseas insurance. The favorable family conditions led him to study painting, canon law and civil law from an early age. He was appointed private physicist to Wilhelm Rosenberg & medical doctor to Emperor Rudolf II, among others.
Anselmus de Bute was also a gifted draughtsman who produced many museum illustrations and developed a museum taxonomy. His love for biodiversity made him a humanist, a mineralogist, a physicist and a naturalist, all of which are depicted in his work. He created many watercolors of native and exotic flora and fauna. He filled 12 volumes with 728 illustrations of quadrupeds, reptiles, birds, fish, insects and plants. Thus, he aimed to depict all the creatures of nature, and the books of his work can be considered a paper museum in which a strange field is created that allows one to immerse oneself in the world of tropical birds, mythical creatures, and everything in between.
